This programme is envisioned to equip the young generation to scientifically understand their surroundings and to involve in future development of the region with an understanding on the ecology and environment. The programme aims to inculcate a habit of scientific thinking among children. The project activities will facilitate expeditions to the natural world around and encourage the children to ask questions about the natural world around and there by developing an ecologically sensitive new generation. The resource team will help them to find answers to their questions and thus increase the understanding about their environment.
The programme, launched at 10 government schools in the district with the support of the ANAHA Trust, an NGO based in Bengaluru, and is targeting school students to impart scientific temperament in younger minds through small-scale and systematic field research.
To inculcate scientific temperament among children Hume Centre included several interesting activities in the School Science Program.
To inculcate scientific temperament among children Hume Centre included several interesting activities in the School Science Program. Promoting and supporting Students Research projects, Monthly Expert Science Classes, Setting up of Biodiversity Park in selected schools, Creation of Attractive Science Posters, Maintaining biodiversity registers, Orientation Workshops for Teachers and Students are the activities included in School Science Program. As part of this program Hume Centre started a science lab named Curious zone where children are free to carryout experiments of their interest. The major highlights of this program are bringing out the most talented students to the world of science and research. In order to find out the real scientist in the child our expert team provides proper orientation and guidance for children.
Students Research Projects
The student research projects promote student inquiry, independent research and links the skills of working scientifically to the context of student’s interest. Research projects helps the students to develop a habit of observation, exploration, classification and systematic way of thinking. This will also create good science background and a positive attitude to science and technology. Hume centre facilitate, support and guide students to participate in the National Science Congress every year.
Inspiring initiative
Four students had participated in the State-level Children’s Biodiversity Congress last year and they became winners for their presentation on Soil as an Ecosystem in different Agricultural Practices and Role of spiders in maintaining sustainable ecosystem.
Monthly Expert Science Class
Students are always willing to attend the most interesting classes. Hume Centre always gives them the best. Monthly two expert classes are provided to students from different areas of Wayanad. The experts science classes creates curiosity and enthusiasm among children. The curious mind will never fail in their life, they will seek for the real problem and keep on asking questions to resolve it. Humes experts are always ready to answer their questions and help them to find out the best solution for their problem. Hume’s Expert Science Classes develops a skill of scientific inquiry to design and carry out scientific investigations and evaluate scientific evidence to draw conclusions.
Biodiversity park
Biodiversity Park is an innovative approach for conservation and protection of endangered Natural Heritage. The objective of creation of biodiversity park is to conserve the biodiversity of the specific areas and to maintain the genetic stock available therein.
The Centre facilitates forming a biodiversity parks in selected school as a small replica of the native biodiversity of Wayanad giving importance to rare endangered and threatened floral components. It will act as an activity centre and learning point for children. Children in each standard will be in charge of each component of each biodiversity park.
Awareness Posters
Science Posters can be used in any scientific learning environment to solidify students understanding and help recap topics that may not have been fully understood in the lesson. Posters have the potential to make environmental information easily accessible to students. Hume centre displays and share awareness posters based on the expert science classes conducted. Monthly four posters are created and shares it to 10 schools.
Biodiversity Register
Biodiversity register is a document which contains comprehensive information on locally available Bioresources including landscape and species of a particular area. Hume centre tries to list out different Flora and Fauna of Wayanad district with a joint collaboration with students from our selected schools.
